History

This church was organized on August 5, 1854.  The organizing ministries were under appointment of the Montgomery Presbytery.

In its early years, the congregation had no regular meeting place.  In time, a union chapel was built by the Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians.  Each denomination took turns on a week-about basis.

During the Civil War, the union chapel burned in 1862.  The congregation then had no place for regular public worship except when Thompson's Tan Yard on North Walker Street was used.  In 1866, Mrs. R.B. McNutt gave the church a lot on North Walker.  After 25 years of having no permanent worship place, the congregation moved into a new church building on January 16, 1887.  That was the first Presbyterian church building in Mercer County.  From this humble beginning, an active dedicated congregation grew.

A new church building was built at 904 Mercer Street.  Use of the new building was started in January 1923.  Plans were initiated for a new building on West Main Street to get away from the downtown congestion.  The new building was completed in 1964, with the first service being held on November 29, 1964.  In 1976, plans for a new sanctuary and additional classrooms were made.  This new sanctuary was completed in time for services  being held on Easter Sunday, 1978.
